UCI pediatrics professor Dr. Dan Cooper spoke Feb. 23 before Irvine’s Children, Youth & Families Advisory Committee about a groundbreaking study of ways to reduce obesity and diabetes in at-risk children. The HEALTHY project identified how school-based diet and exercise programs can be used to turn the growing tide of obesity and other health risk factors among America’s youth. UCI was one of eight academic medical centers nationwide chosen to participate in the three-year endeavor, and Cooper was UCI’s principal investigator. Study results appeared last year in The New England Journal of Medicine. The Irvine committee, among other things, tries to bolster city efforts to improve childhood health and fitness.
