Twenty UC Irvine students have been awarded prestigious 2011 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, including seven in the chemistry department, and two for undergraduates. The fellowships add up to more than $2.5 million over the three-year period of the award. Each student will receive an annual stipend and cost-of-education allowance, plus a one-time travel allowance.

“I am confident that the strong showing by our chemistry students can be replicated across many more of our academic disciplines as we continue to work together, involving ever-more faculty in our outreach and mentoring efforts to students,” said Graduate Division Dean Frances Leslie.

Kenneth C. Janda, interim dean of the School of Physical Sciences and a chemist, said he was delighted and proud that so many young UCI science researchers had won the awards. “This is great news, particularly in these challenging economic times, and will guarantee that we continue to attract the best possible graduate students,” he said.

Other UCI schools and departments where students will receive grants include biology, information & computer sciences, engineering, social sciences and psychology.
