On Friday, Oct. 14, UC Irvine held its sixth annual Shocktoberfest – featuring the West Coast’s largest Midnight Magic celebration – to mark the official beginning of the NCAA basketball season.
The event began with a street festival on Mesa Road that included free food, music, giveaways, games, a Halloween costume contest, and performances by UCI dance crews.
At about 8 p.m., the fun moved inside the Bren Events Center for a Midnight Magic show starring UCI’s 2011-12 men’s and women’s basketball teams. After player introductions, there was a “battle of the sexes” three-point and slam-dunk competition – with the Anteater men prevailing.
A hip-hop concert by New Boyz, Hoodie Allen and the Rej3ctz followed, and then festivities resumed on Mesa Road with Aftershock, a dance party featuring live DJs.
Shocktoberfest 2011 included the street fair and entertainment, spirit rally, including slam dunk contest, best costume, etc. Three performance s followed on stage including The Rej3ctz, Hoodie Allen and NEW BOYZ.
