Ninety-four UC Irvine Healthcare physicians have been named Best Doctors in America for 2011-12 in the latest peer-reviewed list compiled by Best Doctors Inc. UC Irvine has more physicians and specialties represented than any other medical group in Orange County.

“Our goal is to provide the region with access to the best physicians in the widest range of specialties,” said Terry A. Belmont, CEO of UC Irvine Medical Center. “This list reflects our commitment to high-quality healthcare.”

UC Irvine’s doctors practice at UC Irvine Medical Center, in Orange; Gottschalk Medical Plaza, in Irvine; and numerous other offices and health centers around the county.

“We’re proud of the quality of our medical faculty, who are nationally recognized for their clinical expertise,” said Dr. Ralph V. Clayman, dean of UCI’s School of Medicine. “They offer Orange County’s residents premier care while providing leading-edge training for the next generation of physicians.”

In a comprehensive survey, Best Doctors Inc. asked more than 50,000 physicians across the country to identify the most skilled among their peers in about 400 specialties and subspecialties, beginning with this question: “Who would you choose to treat a loved one’s complex medical condition?”

The anonymous and confidential poll information then underwent rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis by Best Doctors. The resultant list represents the top 5 percent of doctors nationwide.

The 2011-12 list boasts UC Irvine physicians in 31 specialties, including three departments rated among the top 50 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for 2010-11: otolaryngology (ear, nose & throat), gynecology and urology. Some individuals were recognized as Best Doctors in more than one category. The 2009-10 roster included 85 UC Irvine physicians.
