The UCI Alumni Association has selected Bruce Hallett ’78 as the next UC alumni regent. Hallett will join the Board of Regents of the University of California July 1 as a regent-designate. Following a one-year term in that capacity, he will serve another one-year term as an ex-officio voting regent.

With this appointment, Hallett also will serve as secretary to the Alumni Associations of the University of California. In his second year as regent, Hallett will become president of AAUC, the umbrella organization representing all UC alumni groups. The last UC alumni regent selected by UCI was Fred Sainick ’74 who served from 2001 to 2003. UCI selects the alumni regent position once every seven years.

“It’s a great honor to be chosen as alumni regent. I look forward to bringing the alumni perspective to the regents, as well as working with the UC community to determine how we can maintain UC’s world-class standards in education and research,” Hallett said. “I am committed to protecting what I view as California’s most prized institution.”

Hallett is co-founder of Miramar Venture Partners, a venture capital investment firm working with California technology companies. Prior to founding Miramar, Hallett served as a corporate finance strategist and lead counsel to high-growth technology companies, venture capitalists and investment banks. In 1999, Hallet was recognized as one of the region’s leading technology lawyers and was selected by the State Bar of California as one of the 100 most influential attorneys in the state.

Hallett received his bachelor’s magna cum laude from UCI in 1978 and his law degree from UCLA in 1981. He chairs UCI’s Chief Executive Roundtable, a group of business leaders committed to building strategic partnerships between the university and the community. He serves on the board of directors of the Orange Coast Venture Group and The Paul Merage School of Business at UCI. He is also a member of UCI’s Dean’s Leadership Council for the School of Biological Sciences.

“I have had the privilege of working with the regents continuously for the last decade and know that Bruce will be an ideal alumni regent, representing the interests of the entire university community,” said UCI Chancellor Michael Drake.

The selection committee included UCIAA board members Salvador Sarmiento ’73, president; Debbie Daniel ’73, past president; Maurice Sanchez ’78, current director at-large, Rebecca Kanter ’00 current director at-large, Fred Sainick ’74, past president and former alumni regent; and Jorge E. Ancona, UCI assistant vice chancellor, alumni relations.

This year, 34 alumni from across the country were nominated for the position. The selection committee interviewed three finalists. The selection is pending final ratification from the UC Board of Regents.
