UCI atmospheric chemist Don Blake is about to rack up some serious air miles. As co-principal investigator, along with UCI Earth system scientist Michael Prather, on the upcoming NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission, Blake will fly from the North Pole to New Zealand, east to the tip of South America, and then north to Greenland. He will […]
Many people turn to nasal strips, clips and stents to help them breathe easier when sleeping or exercising. Third-year UCI medical student Christopher Badger noticed a growing number of clinic patients asking about these dilators, so he decided to review the published research on them. The results appear online June 30 in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery. Badger […]
NASA has selected UCI astrophysicist Asantha Cooray as community chair of a study group to design and set requirements for a possible successor to the James Webb Space Telescope. The group, which includes scientists and engineers from about 30 leading international research institutions and space agencies, will work over the next three years toward a […]
Irvine, Calif., Feb. 11, 2016 — New measurements from a NASA satellite have allowed researchers to identify and quantify, for the first time, how climate-driven increases of liquid water storage on land have affected the rate of sea level rise. A new study by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., and the […]
Researchers from the University of California, Irvine and NASA have uncovered a remarkably strong link between high wildfire risk in the Amazon basin and the devastating hurricanes that ravage North Atlantic shorelines. The climate scientists’ findings appear in the journal Geophysical Research Letters near the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s calamitous August 2005 landfall at New Orleans.
UCI Earth system science researchers Yang Chen and Jim Randerson, along with NASA colleagues, are predicting an above-average wildfire risk in the eastern Amazon region and an average to below-average fire risk in the western Amazon for the upcoming dry season.
NASA has awarded UCI $1.25 million as part of a new $5 million center at Cal State Los Angeles for STEM education, with an emphasis on minority students in areas such as climate change, hydrology, computational physics and data science.
Charles Limoli will lead effort to see how cosmic radiation affects astronauts’ cognition
UC Irvine and other scientists have won a coveted $30 million NASA Earth Venture award for their Atmospheric Tomography Mission, which will study how air pollution affects fast-acting greenhouse gases in the global atmosphere.
