What’s the best part about being an Anteater? Is it the quirky mascot, the hundreds of student organizations, the leafy park at the center of campus or the distinguished faculty? Incoming freshmen at this year’s Student Parent Orientation Program, or SPOP, reveal in this video why they chose UCI and share their hopes and dreams for the next four years.

Biological sciences major Angeline Phan, for instance, says she finds the campus conducive to positive, enriching experiences. “At UCI, I can make the most of myself and reach my potential as a human being,” she says.

SPOP is an action-packed, two-day-one-night orientation required of freshmen, who get the lowdown on class registration, clubs, housing, dining, campus policies and procedures – plus have fun getting to know their peers before the school year begins through icebreaker games and special activities.

This year’s campus climate workshops give participants a chance to discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues; violence prevention; cultural identities; African American and undocumented student experiences; mental health; and disabilities.

Mom and dad can attend an Anteater parent assistance panel and workshops designed to help them navigate the university system and support their child throughout his or her UCI education. SPOP concludes Aug. 20.
