UC Irvine Earth system scientist Eric Rignot has been named a 2013 fellow of the prestigious American Geophysical Union. “To be elected an AGU fellow is a special tribute for those who have made exceptional scientific contributions,” says the organization. The designation is conferred upon not more than 0.1 percent of all AGU members each year. Rignot, who has mapped and explored glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland, is also a senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He joins four other UC Irvine professors who were named fellows in the past two years. AGU honored the newly elected class of fellows this month at the 2013 Fall AGU Meeting in San Francisco.
