Ribbon-cutting to celebrate new Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing building
EVENT: The UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new home on the University of California, Irvine campus in the Health Sciences District on the corner of California Avenue and Michael Drake Drive and will honor the generosity of Sue Gross for her commitment to advances in healthcare and nursing.
Thanks to a transformative gift from the William & Sue Gross Foundation, the nursing school building features collaborative workspaces that foster interprofessional learning and research, drawing the most talented future nurse professionals to the school. An additional gift from the Sue J. Gross Foundation in January 2022 supported the development of a high-tech simulation center in the building and scholarships for doctoral nursing students. In recognition of this gift, the 200-seat, state-of-the-art auditorium was named Sue Gross Auditorium, completing the Sue & Bill Gross Nursing and Health Sciences Hall.

HIGHLIGHTS: Featured guests and speakers include Sue Gross; Steve A.N. Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D., FAAP, UCI vice chancellor for health affairs; Mark Lazenby, Ph.D., APRN, FAAN, UCI Sue and Bill Gross School of Nursing dean; and JohnRey Hassan, member of the first bachelor of science in nursing cohort who now leads a large healthcare service company. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests are invited to the main lobby for refreshments, SIM Center tours and to visit the 4th floor to view the school’s founders’ portraits including an oil portrait of Adey Nayamathi, founding dean and Distinguished Professor of nursing.
BACKGROUND: In January 2016, UCI received a gift from the William & Sue Gross Family Foundation to establish a school of nursing, which was formally approved by the University of California Regents in January 2017. Nursing is interdisciplinary and collaborative by nature. It includes application of knowledge from the biological, social, behavioral and biomedical sciences. The nursing school prepares graduates for basic and advanced clinical practice roles, as well as for educational, administrative and research positions across the healthcare delivery system.
