Hal Stern, chair and professor of statistics at UC Irvine, was one of two scholars recently appointed to the 15-member Committee on National Statistics. The organization, an affiliate of the National Academies, brings together experts to study the data and methodology needed to improve understanding of public policy topics like the U.S. population, the economy, the environment, public health, crime, education, immigration, welfare and terrorism. The committee also provides an ongoing review of statistical policy activities of the executive and legislative branches of government. Stern’s three-year term began July 1.
