BACKGROUND: Oso Tower is the newest student housing complex to open at UC Irvine. The five-floor dorm offers 424 undergraduate beds and a new community center. Ranking third overall among California universities in housing availability, UC Irvine currently has 17,793 student beds across residence halls, apartments and graduate housing communities. While living on campus is not required, incoming first-year and transfer students who wish to reside on campus are promised housing for their first two years, and newly admitted, full-time students pursuing doctoral or terminal degrees are guaranteed housing for the duration of their studies. As a result, about 47 percent of undergraduates and 63 percent of graduate students in fall 2024 lived on campus. Since 2016, UC Irvine has added five new student housing complexes with 5,229 beds to the on-campus inventory. Oso Tower was partially funded through a $65 million grant from California’s Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program. With the revenues realized from this project, UC Irvine will provide 486 student housing grants of $3,870. Students will begin moving in Sept. 19. More information can be found at housing.uci.edu.
