UCI Police awarded grant for child safety seat education program to support underserved communities
Events will be held at UCI Heath clinics in Santa Ana and Anaheim and on the UCI campus throughout the year
Irvine, Calif., Nov. 15, 2022 — The University of California Irvine Police Department received a $90,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to educate parents and caregivers in underserved communities on how to properly install and use child safety seats.
“The goal of this program is to significantly reduce death and injury to children riding in cars and trucks,” Police Chief Liz Griffin said. “Eliminating the financial burden for low-income families helps every child in our community ride safely.”
Funds will be used for a variety of community outreach events, education classes, distribution of child safety seats and training on the installation and use of child safety seats. Events will be held at UCI Heath clinics in Santa Ana and Anaheim and on the UCI campus throughout the year. The car seat safety program includes:
- Child safety seat inspection events and education classes.
- Child Passenger Safety Technician training and recertification courses.
- Child safety seats at no-cost for families in need.
- Partnering with local organizations on car seat safety community outreach efforts in underserved communities.
The program runs through September 2023. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
