Boden-Albala, D.Ph., the director and founding dean of the Program in Public Health at the University of California, Irvine, told Healthline that the virulence of COVID-19 and the strain that the pandemic has put on the healthcare system also are likely factors in COVID-19 readmissions. “As we’ve learned over the past three years, some strains of COVID, like the Delta variant, tend to produce more severe cases and send hospitalization rates skyrocketing,” she said.
