Experts say the undercount could feed into misperceptions about how dangerous the novel coronavirus is. “I just hope that people who don’t take the virus seriously now don’t wind up with regrets later on — ‘I wish you had told me how deadly it is,’” said Andrew Noymer, an epidemiologist with UC Irvine who specializes in mortality from infectious diseases. “Consider yourself on notice: It’s quite deadly.”
