Tosheena has a degree from the University of California, Irvine. “I went away to study, so I could come back,” she says. Born and raised on the reservation, her concerns for the community are many. High rates of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease among Navajos, she believes, are all attributable to the lack of basic resources on the reservation. Clean water, good food and access to medical care are hard to come by here, something she knows first-hand.
