EVENT: The 2042 25th Anniversary Celebration will commemorate the UCI School of Social Ecology’s 25 years of accomplishments and reveal its vision for the next 25 years.

HIGHLIGHT: 5 p.m.: Doors open

5:30 p.m.: Welcome and opening remarks commemorating 25 years of accomplishments by Nancy Guerra, dean of the School of Social Ecology

5:45 p.m.: Description of the school’s vision for the next 25 years by Richard Matthew, associate dean for research and international programs

6 p.m.: Keynote address by NASA astronaut Steve L. Smith: “Embark: One World, Endless Destinations.” Be transported from the past to the future as Smith shares his awe-inspiring perspective of our planet from space.

Smith will also receive the 2018 Human Security Award for his iconic work and dedication to sharing the world from his unique perspective as an astronaut.

7 p.m.: Reception with light buffet dinner and music from the Irvine Barclay Theatre Band

BACKGROUND: The Human Security Award is presented annually by the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation to an individual or group whose actions have made a dramatic difference in helping protect and empower the world’s most vulnerable groups and communities.
