Everyone has a hand (or paw) in water conservation, students say
UC Irvine students have started the DroughtReach campaign to raise campus awareness of the issue and offer practical tips on saving water.
In response to Gov. Jerry Brown’s drought emergency declaration for California, UC Irvine students are taking matters into their own hands. Those enrolled in Local & Regional Environmental Issues are using their collective voice to make the water shortage an everyday concern on campus. “Above all, we want our fellow Anteaters to understand the severity of the situation and to ingrain it into their lifestyles,” said George Atalla, a senior environmental science major. “Don’t let UCI become UC dry!” The DroughtReach campaign will use social media to provide daily water conservation tips and highlight successes and challenges on the UC Irvine campus and in the wider community. The student DroughtReach team will work with management to lessen UC Irvine’s water footprint. Students also hosted “Pledge with Pete,” an informational booth to spread awareness and encourage students to take a drought pledge.
