On Tuesday, Nov. 16, celebrated crime novelist James Ellroy led a master class at UCI called “Memoir, and Memoir Revisited.” He spoke for about an hour on his approach to writing and answered questions from students in the literary journalism, creative writing and comparative literature programs. The talk centered on Ellroy’s two memoirs, My Dark Places and The Hilliker Curse: My Pursuit of Women. UCI English professor Amy Wilentz introduced the author to the class and moderated the question-and-answer session. Previous speakers in the literary journalism master-class series include Susan Orlean, Calvin Trillin and Gay Talese.
