Members of the UC Irvine School of Medicine’s class of 2014 will take their first steps toward becoming physicians at the annual White Coat Ceremony – a solemn rite of passage underscoring the importance of compassion in the doctor-patient relationship. Before hundreds of family members and friends, 104 incoming medical students will each be called to the stage to receive his or her first white physician’s coat and recite an oath used in place of the ancient Hippocratic oath. As part of UCI’s new iMedEd Initiative, students will find tucked into their coat pockets an iPad tablet computer preloaded with everything necessary for the first year of course work. Dr. John Christian Fox, associate clinical professor of emergency medicine and head of emergency ultrasound, will deliver the keynote address. The ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at the Irvine Barclay
Theatre.
