Jeffrey Wasserstrom, UC Irvine history professor and author of China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know recently spoke at Google in San Francisco as part of the Authors@Google program featured on YouTube. The series brings writers to Google headquarters for informal chats about their recently published books. Past participants include novelist Salman Rushdie, economist Jeffrey Sachs and journalist Bob Woodward. Wasserstrom’s talk focused on China’s diversity, the complicated role of the Internet in China, the nation’s modernization, and similarities between China and the U.S. A longtime China scholar, Wasserstrom writes for The Huffington Post and created the popular China Beat blog with UCI faculty and students.
