Silvia Lindtner, a UC Irvine informatics doctoral student, and Gabriela Marcu (pictured), an undergraduate informatics student, have been selected as winners of the Google 2008 Anita Borg Scholarship for women in computing. Each will receive a $10,000 award and will attend the 2008 Google Scholars’ Retreat in April. Lindtner was part of a team at a Siemens Research lab that developed an interactive computer game called Fish ‘N’ Steps that links a player’s daily footstep count to the growth and activity of animated fish. Marcu is a member of the first class of informatics majors in the Bren School of ICS and has helped spread the word about the new program by forming the Informatics Student Association. She also is a member of the Women in Computer Science group at UCI and is active in community outreach efforts.
