Liu Chen, physics and astronomy professor at UC Irvine, has been awarded the 2008 Hannes Alfven Prize from the Plasma Physics Division of the European Physical Society. The prize is awarded annually to one or more scientists who have made outstanding contributions to plasma physics in experimental, theoretical or technological areas. Chen is receiving his award for “his many seminal works on Alfven wave physics in laboratory and space plasmas and his continuing contribution of new ideas,” according to Jo Lister, chairman of the society’s Plasma Physics Division. Chen will receive his award in June at a society conference in Crete.
