UCI hits new high with nearly 98,000 applications for fall 2016
Campus garners greatest increase in applicants across UC system
Irvine, Calif., Jan. 11, 2016 – Applications to the University of California, Irvine for fall 2016 admittance grew by 10 percent over fall 2015 applications, totaling nearly 98,000 from aspiring freshman and community college transfer students. With 8,967 more applicants than last year, UCI experienced the greatest increase in the UC system.
“These numbers – and the consistently high academic quality of our applicants – are evidence of our success at fulfilling the educational needs and expectations of California students and their families,” said Chancellor Howard Gillman. “Motivated, academically prepared undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds, perspectives and knowledge are at the heart of everything we do. Increasing the size of our student body is one way we expect to broaden our impact globally and locally.”
As part of the UC system’s agreement with the state to enroll an additional 5,000 California-resident students for fall 2016, UCI will register 650 more students than in previous years. Among the noteworthy UCI numbers:
- Freshman applications were up 8.4 percent over last year (compared with a 5.2 percent increase systemwide), at 77,786. UCI had the second-highest number of California-resident freshman applicants, with 57,578.
- Community college transfer applications were up 17.3 percent (compared with an 11.8 percent increase across the system), at 19,973. UC-wide, UCI had the largest increase in the number of transfer applicants and the second-highest number of California-resident transfer applicants, with 17,310.
- UCI led the system in California-resident Chicano/Latino freshman applicants, with 20,521.
- UCI was second in the system for California-resident African American freshman applicants, with 2,296.
