Professor Martha Mecartney named a fellow of the American Ceramic Society

UC Irvine’s Martha Mecartney, professor of chemical engineering & materials science at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, has been made a fellow of the American Ceramic Society. The title is bestowed on scientists, engineers and business leaders who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to ceramic arts, sciences, technology or industry. “It’s an incredible honor to be selected as a fellow among such esteemed colleagues, and I am delighted. What’s taken me by surprise is the outpouring of congratulations from around the world,” said Mecartney, who researches new multiphase oxide ceramics for energy applications; how grain boundaries and interfaces control physical and chemical properties; and analytical transmission electron microscopy. Mecartney is among 18 fellows named in 2013. They will be recognized Oct. 28 in Montreal at the society’s annual honors and awards banquet.
