1. UCI. Orange County’s only University of California system campus, UC Irvine enrolls more than 37,000 students and had more than 133,000 applicants for the fall 2021 term. Applications to UCI have increased by approximately 60 percent over the last seven years, and the school remains the top choice for in-state, first-generation college students. Additionally, the campus has been federally designated as a Hispanic-serving institution, as well as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution. UCI is expanding its presence with the building of a 144-bed hospital on their North Campus ….

Bernadette Boden-Albala, MPH, DrPH, a social epidemiologist and [director &] founding dean of the public health program at University of California, Irvine, said she understands Biden’s attempt to reassure the American people who have been struggling for more than two years, but the reality is that we are still in a pandemic. … “We must be careful about saying it is over,” she said. “We still need resources to continue vaccination and to address vaccine hesitancy.”

VOC Staff Pick the Best for the 2022 Arts & Culture Fall Season
The UCI Langson Institute and Museum of California Art will present two concurrent exhibitions for the first time. “Dissolve” will comprise 20 works … by artists who explore modes of transformation across mediums in their diverse practices. It will be presented on UCI’s campus at the University Art Gallery. “Echoes” will pair artworks by California Light and Space artist Peter Alexander with California Impressionist paintings from which he drew inspiration and admired. With pieces spanning from 1896 to 2020, the group show will feature 14 Impressionist works from IMCA’s collection, along with 11 of Alexander’s resin sculptures, canvases, works on paper and a painting on velvet.

4Men Only straight talk features Black doctors
Dr. Melvin Seard, a UCI Health urologist, said PSA testing is very accurate. Black men are 2.5 times more likely than white men to die of prostate cancer, but Seard said that if they get similar health treatment as white men, they will have similar health outcomes as white men. The disparity goes away with early diagnosis and quality treatment. Seard, [an associate professor] with the UCI School of Medicine, spends one day a week with other UCI Health staff at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. In health studies, especially in the VA where Black men have access to quality care, he said Black men are thriving.

“I thought, ‘I’m the luckiest actor alive,’” Nazanin Boniadi recalls of her first moment setting foot on the iconic set for The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power. … Boniadi also felt an instant kinship with her character. “She’s a healer, and I was pre-med,” she tells me, referring to her undergraduate degree in biological sciences from the University of California’s Irvine campus. “That’s why sometimes I call Bronwyn the fantastical version of myself.”
