California Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Amazon
Given the size of California’s economy and Amazon’s role in it, “this is a piece of litigation that has significant national implications,” said Christopher R. Leslie, a [Chancellor’s] Professor of antitrust law at University of California, Irvine. If the antitrust claims prevail, “there is no way other states won’t pick up the mantle and bring other cases,” he said. [Subscription required, campus-wide access provided by UCI Libraries. Naps: A user’s guide
“Stage 2 sleep is really great for alertness and that pushing-the-reset-button kind of power nap,” says Professor Sara Mednick, a sleep researcher at the University of California, Irvine. “Rapid eye movement (or REM) sleep is good for creativity and perceptual processing and also semantic associations,” says Mednick, author of The Power Of The Downstate. “You learn new information and encode it and memorise it in slow-wave sleep, but you then integrate that new information into your semantic network during REM.”

Why it is awesome that your brain can experience awe
By becoming less attuned to ourselves and more attuned to the rest of the world, awe helps us re-contextualize ourselves, said Paul Piff, an associate professor of psychological science at the University of California, Irvine. “It helps make you feel like there’s more going on in the world than just you. And it gives you that sense of being a part of something much bigger than yourself,” he said. … His favorite suggestion, though, is to just take a walk out the door. … If you look around to find something inspiring, odds are you will, Piff said. Monkeypox Cases in the US Are Falling. No One Knows Why
Andrew Noymer, an epidemiologist, demographer, and associate professor at the University of California, Irvine, describes this as “hyper-low endemicity.” This happened with smallpox, he points out. … It’s possible, Noymer argues, that this could happen for monkeypox as well. “Instead of hundreds of cases a day, nationwide, there could be a handful of cases a day,” he says. “Very low levels of disease can just go unnoticed. Monkeypox could just percolate through the same networks, causing mild cases until it starts becoming less mild again.”
