How to Make Cars Cooperate
Azim Shariff, the director of the Culture and Morality Lab at the University of California, Irvine, was an author of a 2016 report in Science that described a series of surveys he and colleagues conducted in which participants overwhelmingly approved of autonomous vehicles … that would “sacrifice their passengers for the greater good” …. “Unsurprisingly, however, they expressed a preference to ride themselves in autonomous vehicles that protect their passengers “at all costs.”

‘This is crazy’: Antarctic supervolcano melting ice sheet from within
Seroussi and Erik Ivins of JPL used the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM), a mathematical depiction of the physics of ice sheets developed by scientists at JPL and the University of California, Irvine. Seroussi then tweaked the ISSM to hunt for natural heat sources as well as meltwater deposits.

Art installation illustrates threat of rising sea level along Southern California coast
The piece “Rising Tides, A Sea Level Rise Educational Installation,” consisted of three 4-by-6-foot murals on wood panels. … The installation was created by students from Laguna Beach High School in collaboration with the city’s Environmental and Sustainability Committee. Irene Bowie, a member of the city group, got the idea after attending a Coastal Resiliency Workshop at UC Irvine over the summer.

College athletes continue to graduate at record rates, NCAA report says
