California’s $15/hr wage could help workers, cost jobs
One leading economist on minimum wage issues said an increase from $10 to $15 would reduce employment among the least-skilled workers by at least 5 to 10 percent. But the impact on employment might be even bigger because employers would have to absorb significantly higher costs. “I would go so far as to call this reckless,” said David Neumark, an economics professor at the University of California, Irvine.

UCI researchers win $8 million grant to find vaccine for Q fever
A UC Irvine research team has won an $8 million grant to help develop a vaccine for the military that could protect troops in germ warfare …. The U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency awarded the grant to Philip Felgner, adjunct professor of medicine, and Aaron Esser-Kahn, assistant professor of chemistry.
