Outdoor Shakespeare productions return to UC Irvine this week
Shakespeare and summer have been cruelly separated these past two years in Orange County, but they are joined again starting this week as the New Swan Shakespeare Festival unveils two productions playing outdoors through Labor Day weekend on the UC Irvine campus. Eli Simon, the founding Artistic Director and managing producer of New Swan, is currently putting the finishing touches on the company’s 10th season, “The Comedy of Errrorrs” and the obscure “Pericles.” Simon, [Chancellor’s Professor of drama], took a brief break to reflect on what went missing and what is now happily to come. New Award for Mathematical Physics, the Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhenskaya Prize, Given to Svetlana Jitomirskaya
For her groundbreaking work in mathematical physics, especially on the so-called almost periodic Schrödinger operators and Jacobi matrices, [Distinguished Professor] Svetlana Jitomirskaya of the University of California Irvine has been awarded the inaugural prize named after the noted Russian mathematician Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhenskaya (1922–2004). The video was presented at a joint session of the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics and the Probability and Mathematical Physics conference in Helsinki, July 2, 2022.

Gov. Newsom signs new law taking aim at single-use plastics
Governor Newsom signed a new law yesterday that limits plastics in the state and is widely considered the most comprehensive legislation aimed at reducing plastic pollution.
