As the pandemic upends higher education, is residential college worth the cost?
“The model of higher education that we are delivering in the U.S. has been based on this residential experience that costs about twice what an education costs in Europe.” That’s Richard Arum, dean of the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine. Last September, he and his colleagues began a first-of-its-kind study to try and better understand the value and cost of a four-year liberal arts education, where students often live on or near campus and are exposed to a wide variety of subjects. Why is there no consensus about reopening schools?
“This is really one of the most perplexing and complex issues I’ve ever faced in 40 years,” says Dan M. UC Irvine helping teach community-centric contact tracing method in Orange County
A new method of contact tracing is being taught in Orange County that is designed to build trust in some of the hardest hit communities. It is a partnership between the county’s health department and UC Irvine. … The training in conjunction with UC Irvine wraps up at the end of August. By then, organizers expect to have 500 new tracers on board.
