UC Irvine lands $40m gift to open nursing school
Philanthropists Sue and Bill Gross have given UC Irvine a $40 million gift − the largest in school history − to help establish a nursing school. UC Irvine’s current nursing program has about 160 undergraduate students and about 35 masters students, says Dr. Howard Federoff, the school’s vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of medicine. With the Sue and Bill Gross School of Nursing, the university is expected to nearly double its number of nursing students, he adds.

Cole, a noted CSI effect skeptic and professor of criminology, law, and society at University of California, Irvine, puts it, “Everything we know about juries seems to suggest that, while being on a jury is often unpleasant, they take it very seriously and are making serious decisions about whether to find someone guilty or not guilty in a criminal case. It’s a hard argument to make that they’re going to make a different decision based on what’s gotten in their head from television.”

Anteaters win at home, prepare for road tests
The Anteaters, the clear-cut favorite to win the Big West title, won two games at home against UC Davis and UC Riverside before heading out on the road for two tough road games. … Saturday’s UCI win over Riverside was important because the game was nationally televised and UCI was very impressive. The Anteaters may have made some believers among those who eventually come up with the seedings for the NCAA Tournament.
