UC Irvine researcher hopes to create ‘universal’ vaccine for many coronaviruses
But what if there was a “universal” vaccine that worked against many types of coronaviruses, including those we haven’t researched or even discovered yet? UC Irvine immunology professor Lbachir BenMohamed believes he can create one, and he’s testing more than a dozen possible candidates now. “We cannot sit here and then wait for another outbreak to happen, and then the whole world will shut down and another million people will die,” he said. [Subscription required, campus-wide access provided by UCI Libraries. Can I take painkillers before or after a COVID-19 vaccine?
If you’re already taking one of those medications for a health condition, you should not stop before you get the vaccine — at least not without asking your doctor, said Jonathan Watanabe, a [professor of clinical pharmacy] at the University of California, Irvine. People should not take a painkiller as a preventive measure before getting a vaccine unless a doctor has told them to, he said. The same goes for after a shot: “If you don’t need to take it, you shouldn’t,” Watanabe said. If you do need one, acetaminophen (Tylenol) “is safer because it doesn’t alter your immune response,” he added.

A new plan to solve climate change’s ‘double black diamond’ problem
Steven Davis, an associate professor of Earth system sciences at the University of California, Irvine, said that a relatively easy way to cut the additional process emissions is to install technology to capture the carbon from the plant before it enters the atmosphere and then sequester it underground. “I say ‘easy’ not because that’s cheap, or even technologically tractable, but rather because it’s something we know we could do in principle,” he said.
