Watch where you warp: Our galaxy is full of black holes
“We were able to work out how many big black holes should exist, and it ended up being in the millions – many more than I anticipated,” said James Bullock, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California, Irvine, in a release. Bullock is co-author of a research paper published on Aug. 2 in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

UC Irvine astronomers make a hundred million discoveries — black holes
Astronomers from UC Irvine have concluded that as many as 100 million black holes exist in our galaxy – a tally far more than previously believed and shocking even to the three researchers. The findings, while surprising, don’t figure to affect life on earth …. “It’s not like we need to go out and buy black hole insurance soon; not like we’re in danger of being sucked into a black hole any more than we were before,” said James Bullock, UCI’s chairman and professor of physics and astronomy and a researcher on the project.

Setting goals around tasks, not outcomes, is the best way to improve performance, a study shows
The findings, from economics professors at the University of California at Irvine … have been released in a working paper (pdf) by the National Bureau of Economic Research .… Because the researchers didn’t directly test the two styles of goal setting against the other, they can’t say with certainty that task goals are superior to performance goals, but they do know they work, said UC Irvine’s Damon Clark, one of the study’s authors.
