It’s that long-established culture of support that helps UC-Irvine place at the top of MONEY’s 2019 Best Colleges rankings. … UC-Irvine might seem like a surprising No. 1, but the university—which last fall received more freshman applications than all but two colleges in the country—is no stranger to accolades. In 2015, the New York Times called it part of “California’s Upward-Mobility Machine,” and it has consistently scored well in MONEY’s analysis, placing in the top 20 for the past five years.

Dr. Edward Uchio at the University of California at Irvine is pioneering the use of the focal one high intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU. It was appropriate for Jeff because his cancer was detected early and localized to one area of the prostate. “Because we knew that it could be one side, just one area of the prostate, we can actually treat focally just in that area,” said Dr. Uchio, the Director of the Clinical Research Department of Urology at UC-Irvine.

“AB 109 did not give Zachary Castaneda early release…this would have happened without AB 109 in place,” said UC Irvine criminology professor Charis Kubrin. … “What decisions were being made, how were they being made that may have contributed to this. Why was he not returned to state prison, at some point, after so many violations,” asked Kubrin.

Record-breaking year: UC Irvine nets $441 million in research funding
The second-youngest of the University of California system’s 10 campuses, UCI reported in fiscal 2018-19 it received 825 awards totaling $441 million in research funding, the most the school has ever received in a year and about a 47 percent increase since 2012-13, according to UCI data. The bulk of the 2018-19 grants are federal dollars from NASA, Health and Human Services, Defense Department and other agencies.
