UC Irvine to launch competitive video game team, give scholarships
UC Irvine launched what it called the first eSports initiative at a public research university, and it will include a competitive team and a coach. “We want to be able to say that if you want to be the best at ‘League of Legends,’ come to UC Irvine to take your game to the next level,” Jesse Wang, president of the UC Irvine Association of Gamers said.

UC Irvine’s 7-foot-6 Mamadou Ndiaye declares for NBA draft but hasn’t ruled out returning for senior season
“He’s not withdrawing from school,” UCI coach Russell Turner said. “It gives him a chance to attend a private workout with a team and get some feedback on what his status is. This is what the NCAA allows under a new rule, and a lot of college players will file the paperwork to find out where they stand in the draft. It’s what any underclassman can be expected to do with the new rule.”

UC Irvine junior Mamadou Ndiaye, a 7-6 native of Senegal, could soon become the tallest player in the NBA. Ndiaye, 22, told Yahoo Sports Thursday he submitted paperwork to enter the 2016 NBA Draft and informed the UC Irvine coaching staff of his decision. However, he won’t hire an agent immediately, leaving open the possibility he could return to the Anteaters.
