UCI boosts admission of California freshmen by 15.6 percent for fall 2016
Academic strength and diversity numbers also increase
Irvine, Calif., July 6, 2016 – The University of California, Irvine will be bustling in September. The campus admitted 15.6 percent more California-resident freshmen for fall 2016 than for fall 2015, an increase of over 2,800 students, while sustaining growth in the academic excellence, extracurricular engagement and diversity of the admissions pool.
In addition to the freshman increase, UCI admitted 27.3 percent more California community college transfer students than it did last year.
These data reflect admission offers as of Thursday, June 23. Preliminary reports on statements of intent to register will be available later in the summer.
The academic profile for UCI’s prospective freshman class this fall is the strongest to date, with the mean grade-point average of admitted California residents at 4.10 and an average SAT score of 1,857.
The mean GPA of California community college transfer students is 3.54, and the cohort includes 44.5 percent more African American students and 38.4 percent more Chicano/Latino students than in 2015.
“The word is out: UCI is a first-choice school for talented students of all backgrounds,” said UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman. “After reviewing 98,000 applications, we have created an extraordinary incoming class. The strengths and diversity of our admitted students for fall 2016 demonstrate that UCI is succeeding in its mission of offering the very best education to the very best students, while maintaining accessibility and affordability for California residents.”
Among the highlights:
- Compared to fall 2015, there was a 15.6 percent increase in California freshman admissions, totaling 21,243.
- Compared to fall 2015, there was a 27.3 percent increase in California community college transfer admissions, totaling 7,451.
- 41.6 percent of admitted students are the first in their families to attend college.
- 31.7 percent of admissions are underrepresented minorities (African American, American Indian and Chicano/Latino). This pool has increased by 1,166 students since 2014.
