Money exhibit at UCI Libraries
Oct. 5 opening event features talk by Catherine Eagleton, modern money curator at London’s British Museum.
The UCI Libraries Exhibits Program promotes the diverse holdings and scholarly and cultural value of the UCI Libraries’ collections to the campus and community. “Gold to Gigabytes” is a collaboration between the UCI Libraries and the IMTFI to highlight this timely topic. Based in the School of Social Sciences, the IMTFI is a clearinghouse for research on mobile money and poverty alleviation worldwide.

The UCI Libraries fall exhibit, “Gold to Gigabytes: The Past, Present and Future of Money,” traces the evolution of currency from ancient times to now and illuminates new trends in the exchange of money and alternative currencies. Subjects include credit cards and cashless transactions; alternative currencies such as Bitcoin; and novel technologies for electronic payment and banking. Library materials and research materials from UC Irvine’s Institute for Money, Technology & Financial Inclusion will be on display. A video documenting money’s shift from the cash register to online, virtual world currencies is also part of the exhibit. The opening event features a talk by Catherine Eagleton, curator of modern money at the British Museum in London, who oversees a collection of more than 150,000 objects, including coins, paper money, tokens and credit cards from the last 300 years. In addition, there will be remarks by Bill Maurer, UCI professor of anthropology and law, and director of the IMTFI.
An opening reception will be held at Langson Library (bldg. 102, grid F9 on campus map: http://today.uci.edu/pdf/UCI_11_map_campus_core.pdf). The exhibit, in the Muriel Ansley Reynolds Gallery, will be accessible during normal library hours through April 2013.
