On Dec. 7, 2000, then-Gov. Gray Davis and University of California President Richard Atkinson announced the creation of the California Institutes for Science & Innovation, including a joint award to UCI and UCSD for the formation of Calit2.

Both campuses’ Calit2 divisions will participate in the virtual one-location celebration of this anniversary via a high-speed connection linking the two auditoriums. “Blazing the Path Forward” will focus on four research areas that form the blueprint for the institute’s next decade: energy, environment, culture and healthcare. Speakers include Davis, UCI Chancellor Michael Drake and UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, Calit2 director Larry Smarr, physician and venture capitalist Drew Senyei, and Dan Dooley and Steven Beckwith from the UC Office of the President. Among the dignitaries attending will be former UCI Chancellor Ralph Cicerone, now president of the National Academy of Sciences.

The open house will highlight research taking place in Calit2’s Green IT  lab, bio-organic nanofabrication facility, nanoengineering research lab, Microscopy Center, visualization and networking labs, eMedia Studio and new eHealth Center.
