Alumni couple's passion for athletics lives on with a planned gift to UCI.

When a Passion Lives On

Leaving a legacy at UCI goes beyond supporting a scholarship or a research fund – it is about creating a lasting impact on future generations.

Steve and Jamie Trevor

For Steve ’78, ’79 and Jamie Trevor ’97, UCI was more than an alma mater; it was a lifelong family. As passionate Anteater basketball fans, the couple held season tickets and helped raise funds for men’s basketball long after they had graduated. So when Steve’s life was cut short during a plane crash, Jamie knew what her husband would have wanted.

In his memory, Jamie established an athletics scholarship endowment at UCI.

When she learned she could name the UCI Foundation as the beneficiary of her life insurance policy, she did not hesitate. This would fully fund the endowment, helping others earn a world-class education like she and Steve had.

Over the years, Jamie’s commitment to UCI Athletics only grew. She joined the UCI Athletic Association, later becoming its president. Then suddenly she fell ill and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Bedridden at home, Jamie was visited by members of her UCI family who took turns sitting with her around the clock. She maintained her naturally upbeat disposition even in her final days, joking about the basketball team or making recommendations for the athletics program.

Jamie and Steve are remembered for their kindness and enthusiasm for their alma mater. The Steve and Jamie Trevor Memorial Endowment, which helps student-athletes make the most of their UCI experience, will carry on their spirit of kindness for years to come. Since it was established in 2007, six student-athletes have received financial aid.

“Steve and Jamie Trevor have made a lasting impact on the young men in our basketball program with their generous scholarship support,” said Russell Turner, head men’s basketball coach. “Each time we take the court, we hope to increase the pride in the UC Irvine community and honor the Trevor’s memory. Nothing impacts our program’s chance to succeed more positively than scholarship support, and we are all grateful to the Trevor family.”
