Shine the Light

UC Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute is creating a new model for an academic eye center that offers today’s patients the most advanced care; teaches the physicians and researchers of tomorrow; and collaborates with Orange County’s nearly four dozen eye care companies in the development of sight-saving devices, therapies and drugs of the future.

The institute’s physicians, surgeons and researchers already are working to restore and protect patients’ vision in research facilities on the Irvine campus, but through the extraordinary community support inspired by the eye institute’s Shine the Light campaign, construction is under way on a world-class facility for our renowned doctors and scientists. We are pushing the boundaries of eye care research in collaboration with the medical industry and the community.

Eye surgeons, stem cell researchers, geneticists, infectious disease specialists and engineers are working on technologies and treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, corneal disease and cataracts as well as a vaccine to prevent eye and herpes infections.
