Lari Wenzel, UC Irvine professor of medicine and public health, has received a $1.9 million from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to create and study the use of a new, personalized approach to shared treatment decision-making for newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients. She will lead the effort to develop and test a tablet computer app that will help newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients learn about and understand the trade-offs among chemotherapy options. Wenzel will collaborate with Dana Mukamel, Dr. Robert Bristow and Kathryn Osann of UC Irvine; clinicians from several universities and cancer centers across the country; and ovarian cancer stakeholder groups such as the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, In My Sister’s Care and the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. The project is part of a portfolio of patient-centered research that addresses PCORI’s national research priorities and will provide patients with information to help them make better-informed decisions about their care.
