A year ago, UCI Medical Center received “droves of patients” seriously ill with COVID-19, many with trouble breathing or low levels of oxygen in their blood, UCI [School of Medicine Professor and] Chair of Emergency Medicine Dr. Chris Fox said. Now, Fox said, some people are coming to the ER with relatively mild flu-like symptoms wanting to know if they’ve got COVID, and others show up needing care for chronic conditions that have worsened because they couldn’t get proper treatment during the pandemic.
