The Council of Graduate Schools has awarded $48,000 to UCI to help fund professional skills training for Ph.D. students from the School of Humanities who are transitioning from their graduate programs into the workforce. The CGS selected UCI to join The Humanities Coalition, which develops initiatives for better supporting diverse careers following graduation, including those outside academic institutions.
“We’re honored to join The Humanities Coalition,” said Gillian Hayes, vice provost for graduate education. “Our humanities Ph.D. students are some of the brightest on campus and providing them with more resources is only going to help ensure their academic and professional success.”
With the funding, the UCI Humanities Center will hold an intensive summer institute in 2022 and 2023 to develop Ph.D. students’ capacities in grant-writing, research development and project development. The Grant-Writing & Research Development Summer Institute will teach these elements holistically, focusing on technical skills and understanding collaborative processes from a variety of perspectives. The institute will also introduce students to diverse careers that incorporate these skills.
“Graduate students from the humanities go on to work in a variety of professional areas, including, of course, academic employment, but also in cultural institutions, government, business, entrepreneurship, and the non-profit sector,” said Tyrus Miller, dean of the School of Humanities. “Garnering the resources to realize one’s goals is critical to all of these, so having a deeper and broader knowledge of grant-writing represents great career preparation, whichever professional direction a graduate student wishes to pursue after they earn their Ph.D.”
