UC Irvine in clinical trial to test drug’s potential to treat COVID-19

UC Irvine will participate in a National Institutes of Health clinical trial to test the antiviral drug remdesivir as a potential therapy for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus that has triggered a global pandemic, the university said Monday morning. … “There is currently no safe, effective treatment for COVID-19,” Dr. Alpesh Amin, chair of the UCI Department of Medicine and executive director of the UCI Health Hospitalist Program, said in a statement. “While remdesivir has shown some promise, we need solid clinical data that indicates it improves outcomes for infected patients.”
