UCI art professor Daniel Joseph Martinez receives 2019 Guggenheim Fellowship

UCI artist Daniel Joseph Martinez is among the 2019 Guggenheim Fellows newly named by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The fellowships were awarded this year to a diverse group of 168 scholars and artists from a pool of almost 3,000 applicants from the United States and Canada, appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise. Martinez is a Claire Trevor Professor of studio art. His work utilizes photography, painting, installation, robotics, performance and public interventions to delve into topics of race and sociopolitical boundaries present within American society. Since its establishment in 1925, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has granted more than $360 million in fellowships to more than 18,000 individuals, among whom are scores of Nobel laureates, Fields medalists, poets laureate and other significant, internationally recognized honors. The fellowships are intended for individuals who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. Martinez said he plans to use the grant to support the creation of new work and to travel.
