Any girls in fifth through 10th grades (and their parents and teachers) who would like to spend a day at UCI learning about math are welcome. Email skmathday@math.uci.edu to preregister or just show up that morning. The event is named for Sonia Kovalevsky, regarded as one of the world’s best mathematicians in the 19th century. She was the editor of a prominent journal, a gifted writer and a passionate advocate for women’s rights. Her struggle for academic recognition began to open university doors to women.
