In recognition of National Food Day 2014, UC Irvine students, staff and faculty are hosting various activities this week to celebrate the growing, purchase and consumption of healthy, affordable and sustainable food. Campus events include:

  • Create a reusable shopping bag: From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, join staff from the UCI Health Education Center on Ring Mall to make your own reusable shopping bag and grab a healthy snack and real food recipe.
  • “Food Patriots” film screening: At 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Social Sciences Lab 228, gather with members of the Global Sustainability Resource Center and Theta Psi to watch this documentary and discuss the U.S. agricultural system and worldwide access to food.
  • Farmers market: From 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 25, purchase sustainable, locally grown fresh produce at a farmers market at the Raymond L. Watson Bridge connecting the campus and University Center.

UCI Hospitality & Dining Services is committed to sustainability, having instituted waste diversion, water conservation and local purchasing policies. The unit buys from farms within 250 miles of campus to help reduce transportation emissions and to provide fresh, healthy food.
