UC Irvine News Brief: Engineering professor wins water prize from Saudi prince
UCI Distinguished Professor of civil & environmental engineering Soroosh Sorooshian has been awarded Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz’s 2008-10 International Prize for Water, in the category of water resources management and protection. The mathematical modeling tools developed by Sorooshian and his research team are used by hydrologic services worldwide for flood forecasting. The prize seeks to encourage the development of “proactive, practical and cost-effective means of making water available to people wherever they may be.” Leading international scientists determine winners biannually in five categories. This year’s award ceremony will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Dec. 5. Sorooshian, director of UCI’s Center for Hydrometeorology & Remote Sensing, said he’ll donate some of the $130,000 prize to charity.
