The  American Educational Research Association has named Mark Warschauer, UC Irvine professor of education and informatics, one of  22 fellows in recognition of his notable and sustained research achievements. The 2014 fellows were nominated by their peers, selected by the AERA fellows committee and approved by the AERA Council, the association’s elected governing body. Warschauer, who also serves as associate dean of the UC Irvine School of Education, and the other fellows will be inducted April 4 at the AERA annual meeting in Philadelphia. “We are pleased to honor these individuals for their significant contributions to education research and to the advancement of the field,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “AERA fellows exemplify the best of research in terms of accomplishment, quality, mentoring and the highest professional standards. We welcome the class of 2014 to these ranks.” Warschauer conducts research on the relationship of new technology use to language, literacy, learning and educational reform. He has directed the educational technology program of a large U.S.-funded development project in Egypt; worked as a Fulbright scholar to help reform teacher education in the Czech Republic; served as a curriculum specialist at Moscow State Linguistic University; spent a year as a visiting scholar at Waseda University in Tokyo; and conducted field research in China, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico and India. His most recent book is Learning in the Cloud: How (and Why) to Transform Schools with Digital Media, which summarizes a decade of his research on the use of technology to improve education.
