Environmental Health & Safety programs win awards

Two Environmental Health & Safety programs at UC Irvine have received awards from the Campus Safety, Health & Environmental Management Association, founded in 1954 to support and educate EH&S professionals at colleges and universities. UC Irvine’s partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority to reduce the number of OCFA trips to campus for false fire alarms — which cut such runs by 45 percent between 2009 and 2012 — won the Perks for Peers Award. And the Safety on Site program, empowering employees to help identify hazards and control risks, garnered the Solutions at Work Award. UC Irvine was the only university to get two of these prestigious awards, which were presented in July at CSHEMA’s annual conference. “Both of these award-winning programs are an integral part of the Environmental Health & Safety organization and have become a part of our campus safety culture,” said Scott Bourdon, deputy director of EH&S at UC Irvine. “We are proud of our achievements.”
